Rhayader Museum and Gallery, www.carad.org.uk, wish to document and record Rhayader Carnival, which has been in existence since the Royal opening of the Elan Valley Dams in 1904, and four of the local Shows; Elan Valley, Pantydwr, Pont Ar Elan and Nantmel. Nantmel celebrates its 40th Birthday next year, 2017. Their website provides details
These are community celebrations which are important in the area. They are popular, grass roots events run by local volunteers and often taken for granted by people who may not see how special they are, how fragile, (foot and mouth had a devastating effect on the shows which are just recovering their numbers of attendees now,) and how important to the health of our community. In their way, our celebrations document changes in society. This is most obvious in the choice and change in subjects for fancy dress and floats which often reflect national popular culture as well as local issues. The smaller agricultural Shows reflect this change to a lesser extent but are still an important reflection of an often under recorded way of life in rural Wales.
