Researching Radnorshire

\"\"At the meeting of the Field Section on Sunday 19 March 2017 members heard from three speakers. Gwyneth Guy spoke about the free online resources available for researching the history and archaeology of Radnorshire. She emphasised the ease with which information can now be accessed and the detail that is readily available to researchers. This was demonstrated though a number of examples of ranging through archaeological records, books, ecclesiastical records, maps, historic wills and legal documents.

Brian Matthews, our Librarian, picked up the theme through a presentation on the Radnorshire Society’s own Library and Archive. This valuable resource is now available at Dolmynach house in Rhayader. Volunteers are currently transferring earlier hand- and type-written lists into a searchable digital database. This will open up the wealth of information owned by the Society to researchers.

Julian Ravest described the new website and how it provided a focal point for communication to both members of the Society and to the wider public interested in the activities of the Society and seeking information about Radnorshire.

He went on to talk about his project with CPAT photographing archaeological sites with a drone. The new technologies provide new angles and insights on old sites as well as discovering new ones. The talk was illustrated by many photographs.
